Community-based, peer-reviewed research from the SHAWNA Project, first-authored by CGSHE doctoral student Margaret Erickson and recently published in AIDS & Behavior, raises serious concerns about the links between incarceration and HIV treatment outcomes among women living with HIV.
Misconceptions About Sex Workers Hinder Effective HIV Prevention Programmes
CGSHE researchers collaborated on a paper titled “Global epidemiology of HIV among female sex workers: influence of structural determinants” which was featured in the Lancet series on HIV and sex work. Information from the research is featured in this infographic.

We are thrilled to announce new faces as directors as we build out the Senior Leadership Team at the Centre for Gender & Sexual Health Equity! Dr. Jill Chettiar, MD, MPH, will be transitioning to an Associate Director role. Dr. Shira Goldenberg, PhD, is taking on the role of Director of Research Education. And Dr. Mei-ling Wiedmeyer, MD, is taking on the role of Director of Clinical Practice. We also want to say a sincere thank you to Dr. Jean Shoveller, PhD, who is moving back to Nova Scotia to take up a new and exciting leadership challenge and be closer to family. We are so incredibly grateful for her wisdom, leadership and dedication to CGSHE and advancing gender and sexual health equity.
A Call for Decriminalization of Sex Work in Canada and Opposition to Criminalizing the Purchasing of Sex
CGSHE led this open letter campaign with over 350 academic signatories calling for the Government of Canada to “support decriminalization of sex work as a critical evidence-based approach to ensuring the safety, health, and human rights of sex workers.”
